General Learner Information

Work-related injuries and exposures during placement:

Injuries and exposures are deemed work-related when all of the following criteria are met:

  • Time: The event occurred during the time when you normally work, AND
  • Place: The event occurred in the place where you normally work, AND
  • Activity: The event occurred while you performing work that you normally perform

If all criteria are met, learners must report the event to their supervisor and to Occupational Health and Safety (OHW) Learners must complete an electronic incident report at RVH using the Safety Learning System (SLS).

OHW is located on level one in room 1452, and is open Monday to Friday from 0800 to 1600 (excluding statutory holidays). If the injury or exposure occurs outside of business hours, please report to OHW the next business day. Our phone number is 705-728-9090 ext. 42350

What if I am sick?

If you are sick during your rotation please advise your supervisor as soon as you can to let them know you will not be in.

Please abide by your schools policy as it relates to absences for different illness.

For COVID-19 specifically, follow your educational institutions policy with regards to return to work timelines.

Touchdown Spots

  • Café Royale- 2nd floor across from the Cancer Centre
  • Garden patios – There are 2 outdoor spaces located in front of Café Royale- 2nd floor
  • Health Library (computer access) – 2nd floor. Current hours: Monday – Friday 9:30am- 4:00pm
  • Main Cafeteria- 1st floor

Physicians Lounge

  • By the Atrium Entrance there is a Physicians Lounge that is accessed via your badge. If you enter through the Atrium Entrance (2nd floor) on the left hand side you will see a small alcove with a door. You will badge in there and then proceed down the hall through a second door. Within the lounge there is a bathroom, fridge, couches and computers available for professional staff.
  • The Surgery Department has a separate Surgeons Lounge that can be accessed by those who will be spending time in the ORs.

Gym

The RVH Gym is available for all staff and learners to access 24/7. It is located on the 1st floor (basement). If you take the purple elevators to the 1st floor, you can exit to the right and follow the diagram below to find the gym. It is badge access, but your access should be setup to let you in to this location. Any issues with badge access please email Medical Affairs.

If your health or safety, or the health or safety of someone else, is at risk, call 911 and/or seek medical attention right away as appropriate.

As a quick reference for students, clerks and residents who find themselves in an emergency or crisis situation of various kinds (examples listed below) If you find yourself in any of these situations please reach out to Andrew Broeren, Director of Academic and Medical Affairs at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre.

  • I am experiencing a personal crisis.
  • I feel threatened or harassed.
  • I’ve been exposed to blood or body fluids (e.g. needle-stick injury).
  • There has been a death in my family.
  • I am too ill to go in today.
  • I have a longer-term illness.
  • I am concerned about my personal safety in certain patient encounter situations.
  • I am concerned about travelling between training sites.

If you paid the badge deposit at the beginning of the rotation, you are eligible to receive $20 of that deposit back. To do so, you need to return the badge back to the Cashiers Office.

The Cashiers Office is in the Main Lobby of the hospital (across from the Cancer Centre and close to Café Royale) and is open Monday to Friday 0830 – 1600 hrs.

If you finish your shift on the weekend or outside of those office hours, please take your badge to the Security Office (main floor by Atrium Entrance) and give it back to Security. You can then email the Medical Education Specialist to let him know you have returned your badge and he can help arrange to receive your deposit refund.

Spirituality is that part in each of us that seeks to find meaning and purpose in our lives. If you are looking for a quiet space to pray, reflect or meditate, the Spiritual Care Centre is always open.

Responding when you hear a Code White or a Staff Assist

  • If you’re by a phone, DIAL 55 to initiate a Code White THEN run to assist the person who called for help
  • If you are not by a phone of Code White button, IMMEDIATELY RUN TO ASSIST THE PERSON WHO PUSHED THE BUTTON
